What is drum roasted coffee?
Drum roasted coffee is a method of heat transfer used to bring out the carbohydrates and oils in coffee, leaving you with a thicker, more dense flavour and aftertaste. In this type of roasting, coffee beans are placed in a cylinder-shaped chamber, known as a drum. As the drum spins, the beans are evenly, slowly roasted. The beans become roasted on all sides. Roasting not only controls the flavour of the coffee but it physically and chemically alters the coffee beans from their original green coffee bean form. It turns them into the familiar, robust, aromatic brown beans we all know and love, and gets rid of all the raw ‘green’ material we do not. In the end, the roasting process is what can bring out the best taste in coffee beans, and what can reveal its natural underlying flavours.
